Overview

Ning is an online platform for creating social networks. Ning's Your Own Social Network runs on the Ning Core Platform and lets anybody create their own social network (for anything!) in seconds. We've designed and built our infrastructure for horizontal scalability, performance, and availability using Solaris 10 and Zones on AMD hardware.

We're looking to add a Unix/Linux Systems Administrator to our team. You'd be joining an operations team experienced with high volume systems run at scale. You'd have a fair amount of influence over the operational infrastructure at Ning.

You'd be full-time in Palo Alto, CA.

Unix/Linux System Administrator Profile

You love the operations of online services and Internet start-ups. You love the thrill of a 24/7 infrastructure that’s always changing.

You have experience with online services run at scale or would like to.

You don't mind being on-call. It sort of reminds you of college.

You've stayed at a few companies for enough time to see an infrastructure evolve over time. You've also had alot of different projects within that environment.

You are an expert in Solaris and Linux systems. You have experience with DTrace, Zones and Xen.

You’ve spent a lot of time with storage management, such as SAN and NFS. If you’ve spent time with iSCSI that’s also a plus. ZFS experience? Another big plus.

You know your way around database and network administration. You consider your time with Oracle, Cisco and Force10 time well spent.

You love a solid night of system performance tuning, troubleshooting and problem solving.

You started in operations because you were curious about how you manage a data center with thousands of servers. You’re constantly looking for the most efficient ways to do so. Some might call it lazy. We call it smart.

Google isn’t your main source of information. You love spending a lot of time online and staying up-to-date on new things in infrastructure via a variety of favorite blogs.

You are equally comfortable building everything yourself as you are with buying shrink wrapped software. You aren’t religious about either path, but instead look for the right tool for the job.

You are independent, but not so independent that you don't enjoy working on a great team.

You graduated from a university, ideally with a technical degree. If you didn’t graduate from a university with a technical degree, your hands on experience will blow our minds and we’ll forget about school.

You choose simplicity, iteration and continuous improvement over ivory tower, complex architecture projects.

Before you send in your resume, you create a social network on Ning. In doing so, you want to know how the heck we’re going to scale to millions of social networks. And the thought of which is already getting you pretty jazzed.

Candidates should have at least basic interaction/interface design skills in addition to outstanding skills and experience in Visual Design.

Skillset

Proven experience crafting designs that are both functional and beautiful. You can take and idea and turn it into a static mockup, and then into an actual “living” webpage, that can then, if necessary, have its interface details be refined in collaboration with an interaction designer. Proven experience creating production-quality, standards-based XHTML and CSS. Basic javascript skills are also preferred.

Basic Interaction Design Skills. You can take a set of static mockups and identify potential big problems in interaction, complexity, or user confusion. You can turn designs into production-level XHTML and CSS that developers can build on, but you can also recognize when more in-depth interaction design is required that you can’t provide.

You live and die with your tools. Whether it’s Photoshop, or Fireworks, or Illustrator, you are a master of the tool of your choice and they can pry it out from your cold, dead fingers. You know that Dreamweaver is nice, but also you know that the real work in web development is done with Firebug, Textmate, Ultraedit, or just plain Notepad.

Basic understanding of development processes and tools. You have used in the past tools such as version control and you don’t need to be convinced they’re a necessary evil.
Code doesn’t scare you. You can whip up a page in PHP, Ruby or Python to show how a flow should work, or you can use basic Javascript to mockup dynamic behaviors in a page.

Facilitate rapid and detailed communication up, across, and down the entire company on platform development decisions, priorities, and feedback into both the platform and the “killer app” – your own social network for anything. Communicate by example.

Ensure communication of clear strategy, goals, priorities, and schedules to the platform development team.

Successfully navigate the big picture and the smallest details simultaneously.

Expert in modern web technologies – Java 5 and 6, PHP, HTML, Javascript, REST, etc. – yet have experience developing in C/C++ or Java. Even better, you have opinions about all of them.

Demonstrated ability and comfort working with founders and executives with strong product vision and ideas.

Experience with consumer internet services a must. We want someone who has direct experience with the rewards and demands of a consumer internet start-up or product team within a larger company during its hyper-growth phase.

Overview

Ning is an online platform for creating social networks. The Ning Platform is built in Java 6u1, PHP, bash, Ruby, C, and a little C++.

It is one of the only modern software platforms today that supports arbitrary content operations over an Atom PP- based API, along with Javascript APIs, seamless scaling, and social features.

We’re looking to add a Core Platform Engineer to our team. You’d be joining architects and developers in a flat organization that likes to solve problems in sub-linear time and constant space.

As a Core Platform Engineer at Ning, you'll play an important role in shaping the technical direction of the Ning Platform, work with the latest Java technologies in new and interesting ways, and have tremendous autonomy in structuring, defining, and completing your projects.

You'd be full-time in Palo Alto, CA.

Core Platform Engineer Profile

You love software. You love programming. You love designing algorithms.

You are an expert in Java and have extensive experience with Java 5 and 6

You spend a lot of time online and stay up-to-date on new, fun things out there for developers as well as regular people.

You love object oriented design and are fluent in software design patterns.

You can point to an itch that you've scratched with software you've built for yourself or other programmers to use.

You've worked on web products on rapid development cycles. If you've been working on 12-month development cycles, you might not be a great fit, unless you hated the 12-month development cycles and never want to go back to them.

You've explored, experimented, and developed in Javascript, XML, PHP, and REST. More importantly, you have strong opinions about them.

You love to dive in and learn a new codebase.

You choose iteration and continuous improvement over ivory tower, complex architecture projects.

You graduated from a university with a strong engineering school and have a technical degree. Ideally, your degree is in computer science. You did well in school or at least did something interesting outside of school to account for your mediocre grades.

You enjoy talking about design patterns and algorithms, and can code on a whiteboard. More importantly, you can do all of these in an initial interview.

Before you send in your resume, your curiosity gets the better of you and you create a social network on Ning. You dive into a bit more detail and are struck by the Ning Content Store and why we chose that architecture. You have lots of technical questions for us.

Overview

Ning is an online platform for creating social networks. Ning's Your Own Social Network runs on the Ning Core Platform and lets anybody create their own social network (for anything!) in seconds. We've designed and built our infrastructure for horizontal scalability, performance, and availability using standards based systems.

We're looking to add a Network Engineer to our team. You'd be joining an operations team experienced with high volume systems run at scale. You'd have a fair amount of influence over the operational infrastructure at Ning.

You'd be full-time in Palo Alto, CA or at least like coming here a lot.

Network Engineer Profile

You love the operations of online services and Internet start-ups. You love the thrill of a 24/7 infrastructure that’s always changing.

You have at least 5 years of experience in complex WAN and data center networks, ideally with online services run at scale (or would like to). You love finding the compromise of keeping applications up with high levels of availability, yet dealing constant change and incredible growth.

You don't mind being on-call. It sort of reminds you of college.

You've stayed at a few companies for enough time to see an infrastructure evolve over time. You've also had alot of different projects within that environment.

You take pride in designing, building, and operating a network that grows larger every single day. You thrive on the idea that the work will never be complete.

You are comfortable making decisions and building infrastructure that you know will have to change in a couple of months.

You have built and run production network environments, ideally for online services hosted at colo environments. You have experience dealing with IP transit providers, IP address space acquisition and management, traffic engineering and route optimization. The word DOS means more than “some old operating system” to you.

You are an expert at functional LAN/WAN systems, IP routing (BGP, OSPF), network security, and server load balancing. You are experienced with Cisco and Juniper gear but you know enough about the technology and standards to quickly master other platforms. The idea of manually doing repeatable tasks more than once frustrates you; automation, monitoring and metrics are your mantra to live by.

You don’t mind digging a bit deeper on the application and systems side when debugging complex, hard to nail down problems.

You love a solid night of performance tuning, troubleshooting and problem solving. You are experienced at using network management tools, packet sniffers and flow data to diagnose how well the network is running.

You KNOW there is always a better way to do things. Improving efficiencies and streamlining work is your mantra.
