Overview
Ning is an online platform for social networks, which means that anyone can customize the code running their social network on Ning for free, in (almost) any way they’d like.
A Developer Advocate at Ning is responsible for a combination of outbound evangelism of Ning as a platform for social networks as well as the care and feeding of people customizing their social networks here. It’s a fun and extremely rewarding role as you are on the frontlines getting people what they need to create their own social networks in the exact way that’s right for them and their community.

- Serve as a highly visible representative of Ning inside and outside the company.
Responsibilities
- Be the primary advocate for Network Creators and Developers creating social networks on Ning.
- Field questions, feedback, and suggestions from Network Creators and Developers on Ning Network Creators as well as posts throughout the blogosphere.
- Rapidly funnel your recommendations into Ning’s rapid development cycles, new and improved documentation, and other Network Creator and Developer resources that you make a reality.
- Organize and lead regular Ning Developer Days for Developers customizing their social networks.
- Ensure smooth coordination between Developer Advocacy and the rest of the Ning development team in supporting our service.
- Lead our efforts to cultivate and inspire potential Network Creators and Developers.
- Author blog posts, articles, podcasts, videos, and screencasts – whatever media you want to use – to communicate creative uses of the Ning Platform, from the simple to the complex.
- Scope out your favorite developer conferences and get yourself a speaking spot. Then provide your audience with real content that isn’t an overt sales pitch of Ning.
- Develop additional shared libraries, code snippets, and presentations to make the learning curve for new Developers customizing their social networks on Ning faster and even more efficient.
Qualifications
- You think putting your stamp on a new developer network for a new breed of platform, specifically one focused on empowering people to create their own social networks, is exciting.
- You love helping people and find it rewarding to dive in and troubleshoot issues, then use that experience to make the whole service better.
- You have strong opinions on what makes a developer program great and can point to a few examples of the ones you respect the most.
- You are an independent, creative self-starter who loves running with things while keeping everyone inside and outside the company in the loop.
- You love software. You love coding. You love teaching people new stuff.
- You can write. Even better, you’ll find some way to show us that you can write when you email us to apply for the position.
- You have experience writing code, specifically PHP, Javascript, and HTML, and you love it. You’d do it even if you weren’t getting paid. Although, in this case, you would be, so that’s not an issue.
- You spend a lot of time online and stay up-to-date on new, fun things out there for developers as well as regular people.
- You have experience working on tight development cycles, love rapid iteration, and enjoy working with product managers, developers, QA engineers, and operations in getting things done.
- You graduated from a university and have a technical degree. Ideally, your degree is in computer science.
